Schoppenhorst Birthdays and Days of Death

The list is in the works

This list was not compiled according to strictly scientific principles as in some areas it is based on unconfirmed information. It is a compilation of statements given by experts, family members, friends, amateur genealogists complemented by internet entries and other information. Everything I was able to find out about the Schoppenhorsts and what seemed plausible to me is compiled here.

Column A = The individual could be incorporated into an ancestors list.

KB Ladbergen: He was eighty years old at his death.

Jane Denny found him on a microfilm of the Mormons. He was honorary chairman of a guild whose name cannot be made out. See attachment: Here at any rate one can see that he died on March 27, 1730, aged 80. Also the name Schoppenhorst can be read clearly here.

A man called Langebracke was godfather of both Herman Emanuel *1709 and Catharina Gertruth *1720. Therefore Jane wondered whether Langebracke could be the maiden name of Catharina’s mother or of Christian’s wife?

Catharina Unknown is supposed to have married one Manuel Wierwille after Christian’s death who presumably was buried under the name of Manuel Schoppenhorst since an entry of his death is missing. At the same time though, it could be possible that no. 2 is not the second husband of the widow Catharina but an early born son of Christian, says Jane Denny.

KB Ladbergen: He was 40 years old at his death.

In the attached document the age cannot be identified unambiguously. Jane assumes an age of 40, in my opinion it could also mean an age of 70. Though the KB Ladbergen says too that he became 40 years old. The short downstroke/upstroke in the figure has neither contact to the long downstroke on the top nor real contact to the horizontal line on the left. If it is the figure 4, then he cannot be the father of Emanuel *1709, Christian would have been too young. If it was the figure 7, then he could not be the son of Christian but the father of Emanuel *1709. Though presumably it is the figure 4 as two lines above it becomes clear what the figure 7 looks like by the writer.

married  February 14, 1731 Catharina *1681 +Dec. 20, 1742

Pastor Clausing believes that he was originally called Wierwille. After the death of her husband Christian *1650 Catharina married again, namely a man called Wierwille. In the KB Ladbergen the entry of Manuel Wierwille’s death is missing, this is why Pastor Clausing believes that he took on the name Schoppenhorst upon marriage and died as Emanuel Schoppenhorst.

Wife of Emanuel or of Christian? Jane’s e-mail of March 27, 2006

Catharina Schoppenhorst and Manuell Wierwille, “eigen” (see explanation below no.3), married on February 14, 1731

As Catharina had inherited the farm from her first husband, her second husband, Emanuel Wierwille, presumably took on the name Schoppenhorst. This is common in Ladbergen until today in order that the farm keeps its name.

"Eigen" means that she was not free but was a bondswoman of a count or the like. From a document of Pastor Clausing emanates that Emanuel was “Eigen”, too.

No. 12 stays on the farm at Overbeck 50 and no. 18 moves away to become a hireling of the Colon Lütke-Stockdiek. (A “Colon” is a farmer who was given land by a landlord for which he pays him in kind or a sum of money.)

Quote Pastor J. Clausing: His name was Emanuel Schoppen Kersten at his birth. His father bore the first name Schoppen Kersten in the baptism registers.

Pastor Clausing writes: If possible, we will try to further identify all entries in the parish register. But we cannot identify Anna Maria *1717 +September 23, 1761, unambiguously. By way of trial I would like to enter her in the list as a daughter of Christian and Catharina. Even though we cannot find an entry of baptism, it attracted our attention that the year 1717 lays well inside the line of birth of their children 1709, 1712, 1714, 1717, and 1720. Therefore, this is possible. Why we cannot find an entry of baptism, I do not know. That is why it is only tentatively. We also were not able to find a marriage.

Cord Heinrich Stapel was arguably the son of the fifth and last reeve: Heinrich of Ladbergen. Because of an inheritance dispute, he lost the post of a reeve including the estate which is located on the grounds – today Buddemeier/Linnenkamp Straße. The estate, also called “castle”, belonged to five reeves of Ladbergen: Arnoldus, Tonies, Gerdt, Cordt, and Heinrich Stapel from 1568 to 1708? (quote Hans Stapel)

He left the farm at Overbeck 50 and moved into the “Heuerhaus” – a house where the hirelings of a Colon lived – the so called "Stallhäuschen" (roughly: stable cottage) at Lengericher Straße of the Colon Stockdiek and with it founded the KV family branch.

Hans Stapel from Ladbergen gave me an excerpt from a book of Arnold Konhorst: ... thereby the meadow (Amtmanns Zuschlag) was sold for 265 talers to the new farmer Wilhelm Schoppenhorst and his sister Elsabein, married Schneider Wilhelm Hünefeld.

Anna Liesabeth Wierwille married again: On December 30, 1810 she married Johann Herman Eschmann +4.December 4, 1837.

Speculation: If the entry above (Excolona) is correct, she should be the third wife of no. 12 and married him after 1809. To my knowledge she cannot be ranged in other than that.

Pastor Clausing also tried to identify her. He did not find an entry for a marriage with a man in Ladbergen. My speculation could be a possibility, he writes.

H.J.W*1787 arrived New Orleans at Oct.28. 1844 with his 2. wife on the ship "Ellen Brooks"

But there are problems with the entry of the date of birth for Christine Elisabeth Schroer 1802-1856 *April 12, 1802, (second or third wife) but this is too complicated to discuss it here, Jane Denny wrote on February 4, 2006. It is not clear whether H.J.W. probably had three wives.

Jane Denny found an entry in "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index 1500s-1900s Record”:

about A. M. Elis Schroer Schoppenhorst

Year: 1844

Place: America

Family Members:

    Wife: A. M. Elis Schroer

    Child: Herm. Heinr.

    Child: Herm. W Adolph

    Child: Christ Sophie Elsabein.

Primary Immigrant: Schoppenhorst, Herm. W.

A letter describes that he emigrated with his second wife and four children in 1844.

There is an entry in Ladbergen, in which a Herman Heinrich is named. He is supposed to be the father of the children listed under no.5, Hermann Heinrich *April 1827 +November 30, 1827, and no. 7 Maria Elisabeth *January 14, 1836. In this entry he is called a hireling for the farmer Snethkamp. One Herman Johann Wilhelm *1787 does not appear in the church books of Ladbergen.

H.J.W. was 57 years old when he emigrated. In the ARD tv movie "Windstärke 8" (Wind Strength 8) one such journey was re-enacted under the conditions of 1850 and showed the enormous exertions the immigrants were exposed to during the crossing that lasted three months. Many who suffered from seasickness or claustrophobia jumped into the sea.

The potential family branch “Hirelings of Snethkamp” vanished from Ladbergen, too, as nobody in nubile age remained in Ladbergen. The other descendants emigrated.

In the immigration list of Albert there is one Christ. Schoppenhorst, born around 1810, married to Heinrich Wilhelm Schroer and child Christine Elsabein *1832 emigrated to the USA.

       1.Christine Elsabein *1832

On rootsweb.com one can read that she was married to a Schoppenhorst who died during the passage to the USA. She had 2 sons with her during the passage, of which one died, too. The second son later lived in Dayton. There it says that he had no children. According to the webpage she married Wilhelm Schroer not until she arrived in the USA and thus would be related by marriage and not a born Schoppenhorst as it is stated in the KB Ladbergen.

According to ship lists H.F.W. emigrated to the USA via New Orleans on June 25, 1834.

He is the one who returned to Ladbergen with his brother Herman Heinrich *1816 (no. 49) in order to take his father Hermann Wilhelm *March 4, 1787, (no. 29), mother and sister (no. 53) with him.

In 1872 he founded the carpentry Schoppenhorst, in 1883 he built the "Neue Haus" (New House) meant for office and exhibition space.

He also was a deputy (Amtsbeigeordneter) for the municipality Ladbergen in the district town of Tecklenburg, chairman of the Urban Planning Committee in Ladbergen, one of the first inspector for trichina and introduced a new cattle breed from the Netherlands to Ladbergen

Christine Sophie was a very energetic and enterprising woman. This can be taken from a side note in her husband’s chronicle. Her cousin Wolfgang can give account, too, about how she often stood in the open window of the upstairs workshop scolding loudly and egging on the workers on the field whenever they tried to take a break. Her brother or her uncle is the Missionary Sundermann who in Borneo translated the bible to a tribal language and of whom the baptistery (shell) in the village church comes from.

This family branch is related closest to the family branch at Kattenvenner Straße/carpentry that I also belong to. Until now I was convinced that nobody from this family branch emigrated to the USA although this was described in the chronicle of Friedrich *1848. The account in the chronicle gives the impression that Herman Heinrich *1822 left behind no descendants. But Jane Denny found out the following:

With this marriage the name Schoppenhorst comes to the Krusenclaus farm (picture). The entry on top confused me a little – a Colon married a Colona? But this entry stands as an explanatory note next to his day of death in the church books of Ladbergen. Since Bernhardine died in 1916 and Heinrich died in 1917, he became the Colon on the Krusenclaus farm after Bernhardine’s death.

Helga Schoppenhorst knows that Bernhardine married Heinrich Wilhelm and that he sold the farm at Overbeck 25/50? (later Werdeling/Dowidat) that was financially stricken.

This means at this point in time there was only one Colon Schoppenhorst left at the Krusenclaus farm because his sister had sold the farm at Overbeck.

Nearly the same birth date as 145, once the first name is Herman Wilhelm once Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm. The question occurs whether this is the same person? If both were identical, the question about the origin of the family from Westerkappeln would have been solved. Most men had three first names when baptized. Since the father was called Herman Heinrich, the son could have been called Herman Heinrich, too, but then Friedrich would remain.

She was 21 years and 4 months old when she got married, her parents were the innkeepers of the village (deceased).

Consent to the marriage by the legal guardian. Why? Father and mother were already deceases when she got married, but she was full of age when she wanted to marry. Why the legal guardian? Banns before the 21st birthday.

1.Dorothy Bert. It is unclear who the mother of the child is. Since the child was called Dorothy Bert and the first wife was called May Bert, the suspicion suggests itself that Bert is a first name and not a family name. In that case she would be   the daughter of the first wife.

In collaboration with the church administration office of Westerkappeln Mr Apitz found this entry of a birth together with information on the parents. All Schoppenhorsts from Westerkappeln descend from this man and not, as originally presumed, from one Wilhelm who was born in 1895.

With the help of this data and with the support of Pastor Clausing Jane Denny was able to establish the connection to no. 136 Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm *1871 Ladbergen.

Sven S. no. 357 from Westerkappeln knows that the family runs a beer wholesaling business in Westerkappeln since generations. Later a dairy was added to the family business.

My uncle Hinnerk. he was my godfather. He was an architect by profession, loved music, especially Mozart and was a very artful carpenter. He inherited Hölter 13 and had started to save the house at Haus Hölter 13. He also loved to eat well although he was ill. He died early.

picture as a young boy

Emma brought 2 children into the marriage, Herwath and Elisabeth. After Hinnerk’s death Emma inherited Hölter 13. After her death Hölter 13 was divided up, the so-called "Eierbude" (“egg stall”) and 500 qm of the farm went to Elisabeth, which is completely incomprehensible for us, the Schoppenhorsts. Therefore, the farm is divided now and the future of the ancestral home of one part of the Schoppenhorst family is uncertain.
